Probing Clumpy Stellar Winds in SFXTs
نویسنده
چکیده
Quantitative constraints on the wind clumping of massive stars can be obtained from the study of the hard X-ray variability of SFXTs. In these systems, a large fraction of the hard Xray emission is emitted in the form of flares with typical duration of 3 ksec, frequency of 7 days and luminosity of 10 ergs/s. Such flares are most probably emitted by the interaction of a compact object orbiting at ∼ 10 R∗ with wind clumps (10 22−23 g). The density ratio between the clumps and the inter-clump medium is 10. The parameters of the clumps and of the inter-clump medium are in good agreement with macro-clumping scenario and line-driven instability simulations.

Recent observations show that supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) spend most of their lifetime at an intermediate level luminosity of∼1033–1034 erg−1, and, when a blackbody model for the spectra is adopted, the resulting radii of the emission region are always only a few hundred metres, supporting the idea that during the intermediate state SFXTs are accreting matter from the companion sta...
متن کاملA Clumping Independent Diagnostic of Stellar Mass-loss Rates: Rapid Clump Destruction in Adiabatic Colliding Winds
Clumping in hot star winds can significantly affect estimates of mass-loss rates, the inferred evolution of the star and the environmental impact of the wind. A hydrodynamical simulation of a colliding winds binary (CWB) with clumpy winds reveals that the clumps are rapidly destroyed after passing through the confining shocks of the wind-wind collision region (WCR) for reasonable parameters of ...
متن کاملProbing clumpy pasts of galaxies from AGB stars
Recent morphological studies of galaxies by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have revealed that actively star-forming galaxies at intermediate and high redshifts (z = 0.5 − 2.0) have very clumpy and irregular distributions of stars. It is however unclear whether and how these clumpy galaxies evolve into the present spiral and elliptical galaxies with regular shapes. We here propose that spatial...

Context. INTEGRAL, the European Space Agency’s γ-ray observatory, tripled the number of super-giant high-mass X-ray binaries (sgHMXB) known in the Galaxy by revealing absorbed and fast transient (SFXT) systems. Aims. In these sources, quantitative constraints on the wind clumping of the massive stars could be obtained from the study of the hard X-ray variability of the compact accreting object....
متن کاملAccretion in supergiant High Mass X-ray Binaries
Supergiant High Mass X-ray Binary systems (sgHMXBs) consist of a massive, late type, star and a neutron star. The massive stars exhibits strong, radiatively driven, stellar winds. Wind accretion onto compact object triggers X-ray emission, which alters the stellar wind significantly. Hydrodynamic simulation has been used to study the neutron star stellar wind interaction it two sgHMXBs: i) A he...
